I just bought some shares in an index fund that tracks the Wilshire 5000, which means I just bought shares in the 5000 largest American companies. I did this because I wish to take substantive action against Standard & Poor’s downgrade of US credit. Standard & Poor’s, and to a lesser degree, Fitch…

The slow-motion disaster of the food crisis in the Horn of Africa is truly horrifying. Last Wednesday the United Nations declared a famine in two large regions of Somalia; 3.7 million people, nearly half the country’s population, are affected. The crisis is larger than just Somalia. Right now the devastating drought in the region means that more than 11 million people need food aid across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

For me, the Mac OS X Finder has been broken since 10.0 was released. It’s a hassle to move files from one location to another.

I’ve been using this TotalFinder plug-in for a couple weeks now to add much-needed tabs to the Finder. I’m discovering, however, that tabs aren’t the right UI pattern for what I need. Instead, Transmit-esque, side-by-side panes would probably be more efficient than tabs for file management. After all, this is what I’ve been doing for years now anyway when moving multiple files from one location to another — open Finder, Command-N to open a second Finder window, position the two windows side-by-side.

I’ve been using this since the early betas. I believe the functionality you want is there. Either double-click a single tab to open a new tab split to the right of the first. Or you can also double-click open tabs to join them together while preserving their navigational state.

This utility is the best thing ever and I will surely be giving the author $15 for it when 1.0 is released as a real product.
